Uruguay meat exports drop 7 percent in Jan/April 2007
Meat exports from Uruguay stood at US$280 million (206.43 million euro) for the period from January 1 to April 14, 2007, down 7.0 pct in comparison with the same period a year ago, according to the national meat institute, INAC.
Beef exports from Uruguay were down 18 percent year-on-year, totalling 115,466 tonnes from January to April 14, 2007. Shipments were mostly bound to Canada and the United States.
Mutton shipments totalled 6,350 tonnes, up 56 percent and major destinations were the European Union (EU) as well as other members of the South American trade bloc Mercosur, namely Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Venezuela.
Uruguay's meat sector posted US$1.109 billion (817.61 million euro) worth of exports in 2006, up 24 percent year-on-year, according to the Latin America News Digest.
