Import suspension boosts aquaculture sector, says Philippines' fish cage operators

Fish cage operators in the Philippines said that the recent suspension of certain pelagic fish imports, aimed at preventing stock diversion to wet markets, will provide a significant opportunity for the local aquaculture industry to thrive, The Philippine Star reported.
Norbert Chingcuanco, vice president for corporate planning of Feedmix Specialist Inc II, hailed the Philippines' Department of Agriculture's swift action, indicating a commitment to developing the agriculture and fisheries sector for the benefit of fish farmers and stakeholders across the value chain.
Earlier this month, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr halted the importation of frozen round scad, bonito, and mackerel to curb the diversion of these stocks, with reports of importers avoiding value-added tax payments.
David Villaluz, chairman of the Philippine Association of Fish Producers Inc, said that reducing fish imports would facilitate the expansion of the aquaculture industry, which has been grappling with low selling prices and high production costs.
Mario Balazon of Taal Lake Aquaculture Alliance Inc. (TLAAI) highlighted the adverse effects of market diversion on local farmers, leading to reduced prices and financial losses, urging government support to alleviate production costs.
Adrienne Nera of TLAAI said there is a need for fish cage operators to receive government support, while Pablo Rosales, president of Pangisda Pilipinas, called for assistance for small fishermen to process their catch effectively and access markets without facing stiff competition from imports.
