Ireland's 2004 seafood investment at peak levels

High levels of investment in the Irish seafood industry is a sure indicator the sector is at a peak, said Pat Gallanger, the Marine Minister of Ireland at the annual launch of the Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) review. Sales on the retail market have also increased by 4.8 percent to 143 million euros.

Exports to nearly all of Ireland's main EU markets have recorded growth last year with the UK having a 19 percent increase in shipments.

BIM operated investments amounted to 51 million euros in 2004, supported by a further 17 million euros in national and EU grant-aid, most of which went to the catching sectors.
