JBS to double processing capacity in Mato Grosso do Sul, becoming Brazil's largest

 

JBS has announced plans to double the processing capacity and workforce at its Campo Grande II unit in Mato Grosso do Sul, positioning it as the largest beef plant in Brazil, Latin America, and one of JBS's top three globally, Perishable News reported.

 

With an investment of BRL 150 million (US$26.5 million), the factory's daily processing volume will increase from 2,200 to 4,400 livestock within a year, accompanied by a rise in employees from 2,300 to 4,600.

 

The announcement coincides with the first beef shipment from this factory to China, following authorisation from the Chinese government on March 12, 2024.

 

The event saw the presence of Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Agriculture Minister Carlos Favaro, highlighting the significance of the occasion for both the industry and the country.

 

Gilberto Tomazoni, global CEO of JBS, said the 38 additional plants authorised for export to China represent a monumental leap for Brazilian agribusiness, signifying growth, job creation, and income.

 

Prior to this announcement, Brazil had 106 plants authorised to export beef to China. With the addition of 38 new qualifications, the number now stands at 144.

 

Mato Grosso do Sul, previously with three licensed beef protein factories, now boasts nine, the highest increase among all states in the federation.

 

The Campo Grande II unit, one of the newly authorised plants, currently employs 2,300 workers and produces substantial quantities of meat and hamburgers daily. Alongside China, it exports to various countries, including the US, Algeria, Egypt, and the European Union.

 

According to FIPE (Institute of Applied Economic Research), JBS and its affiliated production networks contribute 2.1% to Brazil's GDP and support 2.73% of the country's jobs. In Mato Grosso do Sul alone, the impact is even more pronounced, with JBS operations driving 3.79% of the state's GDP and creating 7.2% of its jobs. With direct employment of 17,300 people in the state, JBS plays a vital role in the region's economy, operating 25 cattle, chicken, and pork factories.
