Mexico opens market to Spanish pork

Mexico has opened its market for fresh pig meat and processed hams from Spain, and other EU member states are expected to follow, EU Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan said, following his visit to that country.

Hogan said Mexico is expected to accept pig meat imports from France next and that prospects were also good for Germany, Romania and Italy. An audit is scheduled in May for Poland, he added.

Hogan was to embark on trips to Kazakhstan, China and Japan where he was expected to also engage in trade talks.

.

The European Commission, meanwhile, said the barriers that EU exporters face were not justified "in the light of our very high safety standards".

As the world's largest food importer, it said it respects its international obligations. "We are now insisting on equally fair treatment from our trade partners and this is already bringing good results", EC said in a statement.
