Finland's pork production up 5 percent in January/February 2007

Pork production in Finland has jumped by 5 percent from January-February 2007, statistics from the Gallup Food and Farm Facts show.

The increase is due to transfers from the end of 2006 and an increase in carcass weight. Gallup expects production to increase by 1 to 2 percent this year with an estimated production of 210 million kilograms.

Pork consumption is also seen rise by about 1 percent. Pork imports increased in early 2007, and some of the increase in consumption focuses on imported pork. Pork exports from Finland to Russia have proceeded well.

In 2006, the number of pork farms decreased by 2 percent to 1,060 farms.
