US pork exports to Mexico remain strong in February despite slight dip
A recent report from the US Meat and Export Federation (USMEF) showed that US pork exports to Mexico declined slightly in February 2023, but remained well above levels last year, The Pig Site reported.
The USMEF report said US pork exports to Mexico reached 78,226 metric tonnes (mt) in February this year, a 6% increase over the previous year, while export value increased 31% to US$154.7 million. This resulted in Mexico's January-February totals being 9% higher in volume at 175,026 mt and 36% higher in value at US$346 million.
As for US pork exports to other nations, shipments to the Dominican Republic more than doubled year over year in February, reaching a record 10,681 mt (106% up), valued at $27.7 million (105% up). Exports to the Dominican Republic increased 63% to 18,866 mt, valued at US$51.5 million (86% up). With exports to the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, the Leeward-Windward Islands, and the Netherlands Antilles also trending higher, January-February Caribbean exports increased 57% to 21,616 mt, valued at US$61.7 million (74% up).
February US pork exports to the ASEAN region totaled 4,229 mt, up 49% year-on-year, and valued at US$10.9 million (43% up), thanks to strong growth in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Singapore. Exports to the region increased 48% in February to 7,897 mt, valued at US$23 million (50% up). Because of lower tariff rates in the Philippines and Vietnam, as well as tighter supplies of European pork, US pork's competitive position in ASEAN has improved.
