Ainan Fisheries Cooperative becomes first Japanese facility to receive BAP certification

The Ainan Fisheries Cooperative has received the Global Seafood Alliance's (GSA) Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification, the first Japanese facility to be BAP approved, Fish Information & Services reported.

Located in Ehime Prefecture, Japan, the Yasutaka Suisan farm and the Hamasui processing plant, both members of the Ainan Fisheries Cooperative, have achieved BAP certification. The cooperative produces red sea bream.

Hiroki Tachibana, President of the Ainan Fisheries Cooperative, said GSSI (Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative) at the farm and GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) at the processing plant have benchmarked BAP standards, which they believe will boost exports.

Steve Hart, VP of Market Development at GSA, said Japan's seafood industry is among Asia's leaders in promoting and developing more responsible practises that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
