An update on the Chinese feed industry in 2023
An eFeedLink Exclusive

From five in 2022, the number of 'ultra-large' feed producers in China increased to seven in 2023, as Twins Group and Guangxi Liyuan joined the ranks.
Twins also took control of Jiangxi Zhengbang Group last year. The combined feed output of both companies totalled nearly 15 million tonnes. Meanwhile, Liyuan joined the league of ultra-large producers due to a rise in pig feed production.
New Hope is the only organisation among these producers to see a production fall. Affected by low pig prices, increasing losses and high debt ratios, New Hope was compelled to sell part of its pig business last year, resulting in lower pig feed production. It also cut the production of other feed varieties amid financial constraints.
Haid, which was ranked second, continued to increase its feed production in 2023. Having acquired Hubei Chenke, which has an output of 0.50 million tonnes, Haid's total output was about one million tonnes below New Hope. While its aquafeed output decreased last year, its production of pig feed and layer feed increased by over 10%.
Wens' feed production increased significantly in 2023, driven by an increase in pig production and a steady growth in broiler farming. Muyuan also registered an increase in feed production driven by an expansion in pig production.
Meanwhile, last year's skyrocketing fishmeal prices, together with weak aquatic product prices, led to farmers cutting production. This in turn drove down aquatic feed consumption and production in 2023. As a result, the output of five major aquafeed producers, whose output exceeded a million tonnes in 2022, fell below the million-tonne mark.

Broiler feed producers and those that focus on the broiler sector benefited from the expansion of broiler feed consumption.
Feed producers, including Wellhope, East Hope, Lihua and Sunner, recorded an increase of 5-20% in broiler feed production. Producers, whose annual broiler feed production is above one million tonnes (such as Backbone, Zhengbang, Tangrensheng (TRS) and Nanbao), increased by 1-5%.
Shandong Xiantan and Henan Shuanghui, whose broiler feed output was less than one million tonnes in 2022, joined the ranks of million-tonne ultra-large producers due to the expansion of broiler feed consumption.
