Impact of China's record-high broiler breeder capacity in 2025 on poultry market

In 2025, China's imports of grandparent white-feather broiler breeders reached 1.51 million sets, the highest level since 2013.

In December 2024, the United States and New Zealand suspended exports of white-feather breeding stock to China due to avian influenza outbreaks. It was not until March 2025 that Yisheng Co., Ltd. opened a new import channel from France, making France the sole source of grandparent white-feather broiler breeders for China. Total imports for the year were approximately 620,000 sets, representing a year-on-year decline of over 10%.

Not only did imports of grandparent white-feather broiler breeders reach a record high, but the number of grandparent breeders in production also hit a historic peak, with a monthly average of 1.37483 million sets in 2025. The number of parent-stock white-feather broiler breeders in production reached a monthly average of 51 million sets.

The availability of domestic breeders means that breeder supply is no longer constrained.

According to statistics from the China Animal Agriculture Association, integrated enterprises accounted for approximately 60–65% of white-feather broiler production in 2023, up five percentage points from 2022 (about 55–60%). In 2024, the share of integrated farming rose to 65–70%, with leading enterprises achieving annual capacity growth of over 10%, while smaller independent farmers continued to exit the market.

Regardless of profitability in the farming segment, continuous capacity expansion drives overall group growth as a long-term objective, thereby sustaining the increase in breeder numbers.

Additionally, the number of commercial white-feather broilers slaughtered in China reached a record high of 7.83936 billion birds in 2025, representing a 6.23% increase compared with 2024.

For yellow-feather broilers, the number of grandparent breeder replacements reached 2.5033 million sets in 2025, an increase of 2.84% compared with 2024. Parent-stock replacements reached 80.08 million sets, a significant year-on-year increase of 19.73%.

The number of commercial yellow-feather broilers slaughtered reached 3.948 billion birds in 2025, marking a second consecutive year of recovery growth.

China's unique hybrid broilers, although lacking specific breeder data, also reached a record slaughter volume of 2.442 billion birds in 2025.

In 2026, supported by the expanded breeder population, the supply of commercial broiler chicks—whether white-feather, yellow-feather, or hybrid broilers—is expected to remain abundant. Therefore, it is highly likely that slaughter volumes across all broiler categories will reach new record highs again in 2026.
