Bioflytech initiates production of BSFL-based ingredients in Spain

Bioflytech, a leading producer of Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL), has announced it will produce flour and fat at its newly established facility in Palas de Rei, Galicia, Spain, Pet Food Processing reported.
The strategic utilisation of dried BSFL from its Fuente Álamo facility in Murcia enables Bioflytech to develop BSFL-based flour and fat ingredients at the Palas de Rei establishment. These products cater primarily to the animal feed industry, encompassing pet food and aquaculture feed sectors, with additional applications in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
Equipped with cutting-edge rendering and drying machinery, the Palas de Rei facility positions Bioflytech at the forefront of innovating BSFL-derived ingredients. The rendered flour will supply pet food and aquaculture feed manufacturers, while the fat will predominantly serve pig feed, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.
A bespoke rendering equipment designed to revolutionise the production of protein flours from insects underscores Bioflytech's commitment to innovation. Plans are already underway for the installation of a third rendering machine in Palas de Rei, as the company aims for continuous expansion and advancement.
Bioflytech's ambitious vision extends to the comprehensive development of its manufacturing campus in Palas de Rei, slated to encompass eight facilities dedicated to production, larvae fattening, and compost storage. With an anticipated area exceeding 140,000 sqm upon completion, the campus promises to be a hub of sustainable insect-based production.
Regarding capacity projections, Bioflytech foresees an annual production of 12,000 tonnes of fresh BSFL, poised to escalate to 100,000 tonnes post the forthcoming expansion phase. At the Fuente Álamo site, a planned investment of EUR 2.8 million (US$3 million) in late 2024 underscores the company's commitment to enhancing hatchery capacity, with projections to double larvae egg output to 350 kg per month.
Owned by Moira Capital Partners since 2018, Bioflytech remains steadfast in its mission to provide a range of BSFL-derived products, including dried larvae, high-protein meals, fats, and compost, catering to diverse industrial needs. The company is the first Spanish supplier to secure regulatory approval for manufacturing and commercialising BSFL-based ingredients.
