Vietnam ranks among top 10 nations for pork consumption

Recent statistics have unveiled Vietnam's position as one of the world's top 10 countries for pork consumption, highlighting the nation's significant role in the global meat market, Vietnam Plus reported.

According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, the country's pork imports over the past two months amounted to over 8,400 tonnes, with a total expenditure of US$18.69 million. While there was a marginal decline of 1% in value compared to the previous year, there was a notable increase of 4.2% in volume.

During the same period, Vietnam imported a total of 105,000 tonnes of meat and meat products, valued at US$213.2 million, marking a substantial increase of 44% in volume and 39% in value year-on-year.

India emerged as the leading supplier of meat and meat products to Vietnam, contributing nearly 30% of the country's total import volume. The significant surge in imports from India, reaching over 31,000 tonnes in volume and US$94.62 million in value, underscores the growing demand for meat products in Vietnam.

Import trends from other key markets such as Poland, the Netherlands, Germany, Russia, and Australia also exhibited growth compared to the previous year.

However, the surge in meat imports has posed significant challenges to the domestic livestock industry. Concerns have been raised by industry associations regarding the influx of low-cost meat imports and smuggled products into the local market. These associations have called upon the Prime Minister to implement stringent measures to regulate imported meat and safeguard the interests of domestic producers.

Proposals to strengthen quarantine measures, enhance quality inspection protocols, and streamline import processes have been put forward to address the increasing pressure on the domestic livestock sector.

With pork consumption per capita in Vietnam estimated at around 27.7 kg per person in 2023, projections indicate a steady rise in consumption levels in the coming years. By 2029, per capita pork consumption is forecasted to reach approximately 32.72 kg annually, reflecting the nation's evolving dietary preferences and growing demand for meat products.
