India to test shrimps before shipment

The US Food and Drug Administration will start intercepting shipments of shrimp from countries that have had banned antibiotics detected in their imports.

India's seafood exporters have already been affected by similar steps taken by the EU and have decided to buy only shrimp from farmers who certify that their shrimp do not contain the banned antibiotic.

Mr A. J. Tharakan, president of the Seafood Exporters Association of India said equipment required for testing have been installed all along the Indian coast, and farmers have been informed about these facilities.
