US a profitable market for UK red meat exports

UK Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) data showed exports of UK pork increased by over 50% to 592 tonnes, worth GBP 1.8 million (~US$2.3 million; GBP 1 = US$1.30), up from GBP 1.2 million (~US$1.5 million) in January 2021, while UK beef shipments climbed from a low of 22-220 tonnes valued at GBP 1.3 million (~US$1.7 million), the UK Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board reported.

UK lamb could join the ranks of swine and beef exports, with the first commercial shipments expected later this year.

Susana Morris, AHDB senior export manager for the Americas has cautioned that beef exports may decelerate this year as the US beef import limit has been met.

Morris said the January results are positive, and UK pork exports to the United States have continued to expand, but beef exports are expected to decline in the coming year as exporters face a 26.4% tax.

At an AHDB-organized meat and cheese tasting event in Los Angeles, California state, US last month, more than 40 major influencers in America experienced UK pork and beef. Guests also spoke with exporters about the UK's strong animal welfare regulations and traceability.

Morris said there was plenty of interest from buyers, chefs and butchers, who were also quite interested in the UK's strong animal welfare standards and hormone-free beef.

The AHDB also participated in the first-ever SIAL America food and drink event the following week to promote British cattle, swine, and cheese.

Morris said the US offers numerous prospects for UK red meat exporters, adding that AHDB is devoted to promoting their goods to US buyers. AHDB will attend trade events and conduct their own activities in the US market.
