Indonesia eyes two-million-tonne corn import for 2011

Indonesia's corn imports are estimated to reach two million tonnes this year, up from 1.5 million tonnes last year.

The increase in imports is predicted with expected decline in local production to supply animal feed industry, the National Corn Council said.

Anton Supit, a chairman of the council, said the country's feed industry needs around five million tonnes of corn a year, but supplies from local producers always fall short of requirement.

This year supplies from local producers are forecast to reach only three million tonnes down from 3.5 million tonnes last year, Anton said, giving no causes for the decline.
