EU may stop feed corn from US
The European Union is considering suspending all imports of corn and gluten animal feed from the United States after shipments of unauthorised GM corn were discovered.
Swiss agrochemicals company Syngenta AG had inadvertently exported a type of biotech animal feed called Bt10 to the EU without approval.
The EU's decision on the ban could depend on Syngenta being able to provide a method for detecting Bt-10, and assurances that feed consignments would no longer be contaminated.
So far, the US has fined the company for not complying with the rules, but the EU is still unhappy that US authorities allowed the mistakenly labelled banned corn to be exported.
