Vietnam's livestock product exports rise by 4.8% in first quarter

According to Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), the country witnessed a 4.8% year-on-year increase in livestock product export turnover, reaching US$113 million in the first quarter, Vietnam Plus reported.

Duong Tat Thang, Director of the Department of Livestock Production, highlighted that meat and edible meat offal exports contributed US$38.2 million, while milk and milk products accounted for US$36.8 million of the total.

However, import turnover of livestock products declined by 6.7% compared to the same period in 2023, amounting to approximately US$702 million. This included US$336 million from meat and edible meat offal, and US$236 million from milk and milk products. Additionally, Vietnam imported 518 swine, 1,657 cattle, and 583,783 chickens.

In the first three months, the domestic livestock industry imported 4.85 million tonnes of animal feed ingredients worth US$1.65 billion, marking a 6.4% increase in volume but a 12.3% decrease in value compared to the same period last year.

The department also noted a significant increase in the price of live swine in early 2024 across all regions. The average price surged from VND 53,000 (US$2.12) per kg in January to VND 58,100 (US$2.32) per kg in March.

Currently, live swine prices range from VND 58,000 - 62,000 (US$2.32 – 2.48) per kg, varying by province and city. The first quarter of this year witnessed a 9.7% increase in average live swine prices compared to the same period in 2023, resulting in a profit of 5,000-6,000 (US$0.20 – 0.24) per kg for farmers.

In the second quarter, the Department of Livestock Production plans to closely monitor the supply and prices of animal feed ingredients both domestically and abroad. This effort aims to mitigate any potential impacts on the livestock industry's production and business.

Furthermore, measures will be implemented to strictly control the trading and transportation of cattle, poultry, and related products, particularly at border gates and border zones. Collaboration with relevant units will focus on addressing violations related to the quality of livestock breeds and animal feed.
