Spain looks to export pork to Philippines

Spain is looking to expand its pork exports into the Philippines as demand is expected to rise further due to increased consumption and an improving economy, The Philippine Star reported.
Interporc, the Spanish pork industry association, is looking to expand into the retail market, as it currently only serves Philippine meat processors.
Daniel de Miguel, deputy director and international manager of Interporc, said they have a proven track record in terms of relationships, and they hope to gain new channels to sell their products because they export to processors.
Interporc said that it is prepared to meet the country's demand for pork in the retail market, which is experiencing steady growth.
Unlike in Europe, De Miguel cited the Philippines' growing consumption as a primary motivator for targeting retail channels.
Interporc reported a 30% increase in exports to the Philippines over the last three years, with shipments continuing to rise. De Miguel said the coming years should see a 5-10% increase, depending on demand in the Philippines.
African swine fever (ASF) has now spread to 16 regions after the deadly virus spread to Central Visayas.
Interporc said that Spain, Europe's largest pork producer, is ready to help supplement the Philippine pork supply.
Data from the Philippines' Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) showed that Spain was the country's top source of pork last year, importing 222.08 million kg, or 31.3% of total pork shipments.
According to BAI data, Spain remained the country's major supplier of pork as of end-February this year, with 8.75 million kg, accounting for 28.9% of all pork imports.
