Group opposes setup of South Dakota, US pork processing plant over pollution concerns
A proposed pork processing plant, that will be set up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the United States, has received opposition from a group over future concerns of pollution, odour and proximity to residential areas.
The group, Citizens for a Sustainable Sioux Falls, sent a letter to Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken as well as members of the city council, asking them to take "immediate action" to pause the construction of the hog-processing complex within city limits.
Wholestone Farms is looking to construct a facility that could process up to six million hogs per year, around the same production capacity as a Smithfield plant downtown.
"Far too many Sioux Falls residents are unaware this project is going forward within city limits," the letter stated.
