Charoen Pokphand Foods PLC (CP Foods) has recently highlighted food security as key to achieve responsible operations throughout the supply chain and sustainably deliver sufficient quantity of safe, quality food.
Wuthichai Sithipreedanant, CP Foods' senior vice president of corporate social responsibility and sustainable development, said that the company places significant importance on its three pillars towards sustainability - Food Security, Self-Sufficient Society and Balance of Nature. In support of its vision of "Kitchen of the World", the pillars highlighted efficient and continuous operations to ensure the production of quality and safe food that meets demands and environmental conservation principles under the Circular Economy concept.
Additionally, CP Foods integrated the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the pillars. Out of 17 goals, CP Foods is committed to accomplish 13 of them, the company said. Sustainability strategies have been reviewed regularly to cope with changing global conditions and new challenges so that the operations can proceed and achieve continuous growth.
Sithipreedanant added that its 2020 Sustainability Report also presented CP Foods' successful resource management in line with the Circular Economy concept. The company witnessed higher efficiency in natural resource utilisation in the past year, with raw water usage per unit of product falling by 36% compared to the 2015 base year while water recycling and reuse increased by 42%. In the year, CP Foods' greenhouse gas emissions were slashed by 586,000 tonnes.
In 2020, the company fulfilled seven sustainability goals including a cut in energy consumption per unit of product, lower dependence on raw water and lower waste to landfill. CP Foods plans to continuously lower emissions from its operations, enhance production efficiency, promote renewable energy, create climate-friendly products, improve logistics and reduce food waste using nature-based solution.
Sithipreedanant said that, under CP Foods' 2030 sustainability strategy, the company will emphasise on food innovations.
