Japan purchases feed wheat, barley in SBS tender

A government official said that Japan's agriculture ministry purchased Wednesday (Apr 11) 58,550 tonnes of feed wheat and 39,785 tonnes of feed barley in a sell-buy-sell tender.

The ministry bought the entire amount for bulk shipment by July 31, an official from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said.

Japan initially sought 120,000 tonnes of feed wheat and 200,000 tonnes of feed barley in the tender.

Under the SBS system, end-users can negotiate collectively on price, quantity and origin of grains before submitting bids to trading firms through the agriculture ministry.

Japan mostly buys wheat and barley from Canada, Australia, the US and France.
