Japan imposes tough requirements for shrimp imports

After learning that imports of shrimp from India contained residues of banned antibiotics, Japan has imposed tough measures on future shipments. It is now mandatory for all consignments to be accompanied by a check report that the material is free of antibiotics, especially nitrofuran which is suspected to be carcinogenic.

India's Marine Products Export Development Authority has said it is ready to meet any of the Japanese demands and all shipments will be tested at the Export Inspection Authority laboratories, such as the SeaLab of the Seafood Exporters Association of India.

Trade figures are not likely to be affected badly, said the department.
