Building a More Resilient Poultry Business: Proven Strategies for Operational Excellence

The ongoing Middle East conflict in Iran has sparked repercussions for the global market, as fuel prices jump and precipitate the increased costs of products and services.

This spells more trouble for world agriculture - the supply of energy and fertilisers, which are needed in producing grains, has been curtailed, and farmers would have to pay more for these inputs, thus the possibility of raising the prices of their produce, according to a Bloomberg report.

Unfortunately, it will also now cost more to transport animal feed worldwide. Already, feed alone can take up a large portion of operating a chicken farm, and it is a financial burden that could only rise in the coming days.

The strategy for a sustainable poultry operation thus lies in optimising and protecting operation and production, dovetailed with good cost control and sufficient profit generation.

Poultry health must be protected, ensuring each bird farmed is not wasted to avoidable ailments. The supplementation of tributyrin, a triglyceride possessing three molecules of butyric acid bound to glycerol, can improve gut integrity and bird health - that will then drive nutrient absorption and digestibility, resulting in better performance and profitability, Evonik says (pages 6-7)

Furthermore, there should be measures targeted at improving feed efficiency in poultry diets and lowering on-farm mortalities. Phytobiotics explains the mode of action of its Sangrovit® feed additive in reducing gut inflammation and supporting intestinal barrier function (pages 8-9).

Aviagen offers a crucial strategy centered on biosecurity and health, perceived through six interconnected pillars (pages 10-11) With Bacillus strain-based Poultry Eco production, Arm & Hammer develops a threepronged approach to strong poultry litter management, which determines overall flock success (pages 12-13).

Phode presents the case for plant extracts in helping to achieve better flock uniformity (pages 14-15).

As more aspects of poultry farming are being well taken care of, the resilience of poultry businesses to withstand challenges strengthens.
