EU not expecting recovery in swine exports to China

The EU does not expect a recovery in swine exports to China this year, following a 50% reduction in exports in 2022, Farmers Journal reported.

EU pork exports declined 16% overall in 2022, with the 50% drop in exports to China a major cause.

Exports to other countries such as Japan (+23%), the Philippines (+21%), South Korea (+12%), and Australia (+19%) helped offset the decline in exports to China.

According to the EU's short-term outlook, pork exports may fall by an additional 3% in 2023.

The majority of EU member states saw a decline in pork production last year, falling on average by 5.6%.

The EU's December 2022 livestock survey shows that the number of breeding sows decreased by half a million head (-4.6%) in 2022 after falling by 370,000 head (-3.6%) in 2021.

It is anticipated that the African swine fever (ASF) situation won't change significantly in 2023, and that this will continue to elicit strong reactions in affected countries as well as among trading partners.

EU poultry production is expected to increase by about 1.1% this year. The outlook showed that there is higher demand for poultry due to general inflation, as consumers substitute more expensive meats (beef and pork) with cheaper poultry meat.

This could support EU poultry consumption growth this year, with a projected increase of 2.5%.

The EU's poultry production decreased by 1.7% last year, driven by the decline in poultry production in France, Italy, and Germany.
