Pork output in Mexico projected to increase in 2022

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said Mexico's pork production is expected to increase to 1.6 million tonnes in 2022, the UK Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board reported.

USDA data showed Mexico's pork output was at 1.5 million tonnes in 2021, and they import large volumes of pork especially from the US. Mexico imported 1.1 million tonnes product weight in 2021, higher than 2020 according to Bill of Lading data.

Compared to Europe, Mexico's sow population productivity is lower but there are gains to be made. Increased input costs may result in some challenges and lower profitability.

But domestic demand is projected to grow as Mexico steadily recovers post-COVID-19.

While food inflation could affect demand, pork is an affordable protein in the country with pork offal a popular choice.

Mexico is expected to import more pork in 2022, as street food stalls and restaurants reopen in the country.

Mexico will also export more pork this year, especially to the US, Japan, and South Korea.
