Poultry production: Embracing sustainability and confronting adversity
Multiple challenges confronted the growth of the global poultry trade last year.
Avian influenza swept through parts of the world, leading to massive deaths of birds through disease-caused mortality or culling. Winter energy prices in Europe were expected to climb "up to 10 times higher than average levels," according to Rabobank. High feed prices become an even more acute issue, the continual thorn in livestock production's flesh. These developments were - and are still- the burdens endured by the poultry industry in Q4 2022 and early 2023.
Despite these hurdles, Rabobank was sanguine with its outlook for those periods.
"From a market perspective, a weaker economic climate with pressure on spending power will lead to more price-driven consumer behavior, which supports poultry consumption as it is the cheapest meat protein option," the Dutch multinational banking company opined.
More can be done, however, to elevate the viability of poultry production as a business. With the search for relevant solutions, it would be tempting to look at sustainability through an environmentalcentric prism; in a more general sense, the concept can be better understood beyond mere 'green' matters.
To then expand the scope of sustainability, as well as drive dynamism, in poultry production, a holistic set of fundamental principles would be needed. In this issue, Aviagen shows how it's done with its five commitments, namely: health, food safety and food security; biodiversity; balanced breeding; the importance of management and stockmanship; and transparency, communication and engagement.
