Norway's Q1 2013 seafood exports equivalent to Q1 2012
Norway's value of seafood exports in the first quarter of 2013 totalled NOK13.4 billion (US$2.34 billion), which is at the same level as in the first quarter of 2012.
In March, the value of seafood exports totalled NOK4.6 billion (US$805 million), representing a decrease of 4% or NOK190 million (US$33 million) compared to the same month last year, according to the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC).
The value of salmon exports in the first quarter of 2013 totalled NOK8.2 billion (US$1.43 billion), which implies an increase of 22% or NOK1.5 billion (US$262 million) compared to the same period last year. Exports of salmon in March were valued at NOK3 billion (US$525 million), a figure which compared to March last year represents an increase of 12% or NOK312 million (US$55 million).
The average price for fresh whole salmon in March was NOK37.65 (US$6.59) per kilogramme, compared to NOK28.34 (US$4.96) per kilogramme in March last year. France and Poland were the biggest markets for salmon.
The value of exports of fjord trout in the first quarter of 2013 increased by 20% or NOK79 million (US$14 million) to a total of NOK482 million (US$84 million). The value of exports of fjord trout in March totalled NOK144 million (US$25 million), down by 9% or NOK15 million (US$2.62 million) compared to the same month last year. The biggest markets for fjord trout are Russia and Japan.
The value of exports of herring in the first quarter of 2013 totalled NOK812 million (US$142 million), representing a drop of 48% or NOK741 million (US$130 million) compared to the first quarter of 2012. In March, the value of herring exports totalled NOK186 million (US$32.53 million), a decline of 46% or NOK156 million (US$27 million) from March last year. Russia and Ukraine are the biggest markets for herring.
Mackerel exports in the first quarter of 2013 were valued at NOK478 million (US$84 million), down by 39% or NOK302 million (US$53 million) from the first quarter last year. In March, the value of mackerel exports from Norway totalled NOK106 million (US$18.54 million), down by 25% or NOK36 million (US$6 million) compared to the same month last year. China and Russia are the most important mackerel markets.
Exports of clipfish in the first quarter of 2013 totalled NOK745 million (US$130 million), a decline of 16% or NOK137 million (US$24 million) compared to the first quarter of 2012. The volume of exports was the same as last year. In March, the value of clipfish exports totalled NOK173 million (US$30 million), down by 20% or NOK44 million (US$7.70 million) from March last year.
Exports of salted fish in the first quarter totalled NOK282 million (US$49 million). Compared to the first quarter of 2012, this is a reduction of 13% or NOK44 million (US$7.70 million). The volume of exports increased by 10% or 1,000 tonnes to a total of 11,216 tonnes. The value of exports of salted fish in March totalled NOK136 million (US$24 million), down by 18% or NOK29 million (US$5 million) from March last year.
In the first quarter of 2013, exports of fresh cod including fillets were valued at NOK490 million (US$86 million), which implies an increase of 21% or NOK85 million (US$15 million) compared to the same quarter last year. The volume of exports in the same period increased by no less than 63% or 9,000 tonnes to a total of 23,000 tonnes. In March, the value of exports of fresh cod including fillets totalled NOK209 million (US$36.56 million). This is an increase of 31% or NOK49 million (US$8.57 million) compared to March 2012.
The value of exports of frozen cod including fillets in the first quarter of 2013 totalled NOK419 million (US$73 million), representing a downturn of 11% or NOK54 million (US$9.44 million) compared to the first quarter of 2012. Export volume in the same period showed growth of 17% or 3,144 tonnes to a total of 22,000 tonnes. In March, the value of exports of frozen cod including fillets totalled NOK123 million (US$21.51 million), a drop of 15% or NOK21 million (US$4 million) from March last year.
