EU committee endorses new marketing standards for poultry meat

The EU's Special Agriculture Committee has endorsed the new marketing standards for poultry meat and prepared poultry products.

The new standards established that kebabs and other prepared foods made from frozen poultry can no longer be labelled as fresh products. A transitional period is allowed for products which have a short shelf life, and will be effective April 1, 2010.

The regulation is expected to be adopted without debate once the European Parliament gives its final approval.

The new standards will not concern the definition of the product, which is expected to remain "poultry meat for human consumption, which has undergone no treatment other than cold treatment".
