China sets up largest seafood market in Tongchuan

China's Shanghai Putuo district relocated stores in Tongchuan seafood market, the city's largest, to set up the place as a commercial and cultural center, official Liu Jingzhong, said Wednesday.

The stores in the seafood market will be separated and moved to five food markets including Dongfang International Seafood Center in Yangpu District, the under-construction Xijiao International Agricultural Center and Yangtze Delta Region Agricultural Center in Qingpu District, as well as Jiangyang Agricultural Market in Baoshan District, Liu Jingzhong said during a conference.

The Tongchuan Seafood Market was formed in 1980 by some farmers in Putuo.

The market gradually developed to become the largest and most famous seafood market in the city.

The Chinese government expressed plans to renovate the area into a multi-functional complex that includes services such as trading, logistics, exhibiting and tourism in the complex, Liu said.
