UK's milk production hits nine-year high in 2013-14

UK's milk production hit nine-year high in 2013-14, while ample supply this spring is expected to put downward pressure on the market.

UK produced 1.246 billion litres of milk in March, up 12% on-year and the highest monthly volume since the Rural Payments Agency started collecting figures 20 years ago.

The provisional total is 13.670 billion litres, the best performance since 2004-05. However, it is still short of 15.3 billion litre quota.

The impressive spring production looked set to continue and could have an impact on the milk market. The price of spot milk has fallen to about £26/litre (US$43.54/litre), while the average farmgate price was at £33.85/litre (US$56.69/litre) in February.
