WTO's verdict on Russian import ban of European pork "secretly" announced

The European Commission had apparently been informed by the World Trade Organization (WTO) about the latter's ruling on Russia's import ban on EU pork, according to a source close to the matter.

The WTO "secretly" announced its verdict to the EU and Russia, EU Trade Insights reported. A panel report, in connection to the matter, will not be disclosed to the public until after approval by the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body within 60 days.

Russia had suspended imports of live European pigs and pork in 2014 following outbreaks of the African swine fever in Lithuania and Poland.

In the same year, the EU decided to proceed with a litigation against the ban under the WTO's dispute settlement process following failure to reach a consensus on the issue between the two regions.
