Floating fish farm off southern China coast uses AI to manage aquaculture

A floating fish farm off the coast of southern China is using artificial intelligence to manage aquaculture, in a move developers say could improve efficiency and reduce labor.
The platform, known as "Zhanjiang Bay No.1," is located near Naozhou Island in Guangdong province. It is designed to raise around 200 tonnes of fish while requiring only three to four workers to operate.
From a control room, staff can manage feeding, monitor fish growth, and oversee harvesting, with much of the process automated.
Underwater cameras and sonar systems collect data on fish behavior, water temperature, and oxygen levels. This information is sent to an AI system, which analyses fish size, population, and feeding patterns to support daily operations.
Developers said the system is expected to evolve into a fully integrated model covering sensing, prediction, and control. Large volumes of underwater video and acoustic data are being collected to train the AI, allowing it to make more precise decisions—from fry stocking density to the timing of harvest.
