Georgia allocates eight locations for aquaculture farms

Otar Shamugia, Georgia's Agriculture Minister, said eight locations in the coastline of Adjara, Samegrelo and Guria regions have been earmarked for the farming of fish and shellfish in the country, Agenda reported.

The farms will be built on the advice of international experts, with the minister stating that there is great potential in the local aquaculture industry.

He also said that zone management plans and investor proposals would be considered before additional permits and their conditions are outlined, potentially attracting large investments.

Shamugia said that Georgia can produce more products to meet local demand, employ more people, and increase export capacity by hundreds of millions of dollars.

Georgian aquaculture law only allows aquaculture production in government-approved zones within special economic zones.

The main recommendations for aquaculture zones were developed in close collaboration with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation.
