Europe proposes new rules to limit emissions from livestock farms
The European Commission is planning to upgrade European Union (EU) rules covering pollution that would limit emissions from 20,000 livestock farms in the region, Reuters reported.
The new rules would require authorities from member nations to enforce the strictest possible emission limit values, and adds cattle farming to the regulation for the first time.
The rule, which already has swine and poultry farms included but will add more of those farms, will cover 43% of EU livestock greenhouse gas methane emissions.
EU countries and the European Parliament will need to negotiate the new rules, and would not be enforced until 2027.
Operators who break this new emissions law will face fines and have permits suspended. EU governments must also ensure their citizens are able to claim compensation for damages suffered from firms exceeding the emissions cap.
