EU cereal production recovers - report

The European Commission on Thursday, April 5, released a report on short-term agricultural markets' outlook, which highlighted, among others, the recovery of EU cereal production after it registered an increase by 10 million tonnes from 2016 to 2017.

The report said that oilseed production is expected to rise, led by rapeseed marking a 9% increase compared to 2016-17.

For the dairy sector, sustained demand for dairy products will be matched with a growth in milk production from 165.1 million tonnes in 2017 to 167.1 million tonnes in 2018.

In the meat sector, EU beef exports, after a sustained increase in the last few years, will likely stabilise at a record high level with 0.24 million tonnes of live animals and 0.28 million tonnes of meat exports in 2018, while production is expected to slightly decrease.

Sheep meat production and exports are expected to stabilise this year, too.

As for the poultry sector, production and trade are expected to recover this year from the effects of the 2017 bird flu.
