Pork sales in Sibu, Sarawak state, Malaysia to resume
Albert Tiang, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) market and petty traders standing committee chairman said pork sales will resume in Sibu, Sarawak state, Malaysia from April 2, 2022 once there are sufficient pork supplies, Borneo Post reported.
He said the SMC was permitted to reopen its abattoir from March 30 from Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS), but livestock supply will only arrive from April 1 so pork stocks will be sold on April 2.
Tiang said pork sold in modern retail stores do not have this restrictions as their products are sourced from DVSS certified swine farms in Kuching, the capital of Sarawak state.
Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi, Minister for Modernisation of Agriculture and Regional Development said the DVSS has given the green light for the swine abattoir to reopen after a DVSS's inspection on March 25 subject to strict compliance of the standard operating procedures.
On March 9, the SMC swine abattoir and pork market were shut down after African swine fever (ASF) was detected there. The area was sealed for thorough cleaning and sanitisation.
Dr Rundi said all swine transported to slaughterhouses must be sourced from registered swine farms, as control and surveillance at the source is important to prevent ASF.
