South Korean farmers raising more hanwoo cattle

Farmers in South Korea are now raising more hanwoo, a home-bred cattle, to satisfy increased domestic demand, said the National Statistical Office (NSO).

The ban on US beef imports due to failure to meet Korea's quarantine requirements last year has helped boost demand for hanwoo.

According to the NSO, the number of hanwoo cattle reached 2.08 million nationwide as of the end of March, marking an 11.3 percent increase from last year.

The total number of all types of cattle raised in Korea grew 9.7 percent to 2.24 million.

A bull hanwoo weighing 600 kilogrammes costs 4.68 million won (US$4,716).
