Tra Vinh, Vietnam, aids poultry farmers in vaccinating against avian influenza

The agricultural sector in Trà Vinh Province, Vietnam, is raising awareness and supporting livestock farmers to vaccinate their poultry against avian influenza.

The sub-department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine in Trà Vinh will assist livestock farmers in vaccinating over 3.15 million poultry birds and conduct disinfection spraying in barns and at poultry trading, slaughtering and processing points.

In the first quarter of 2024, the department provided over 8,960 litres of chemicals to localities for disinfection spraying in barns for 49,640 livestock farming households.

Through awareness campaigns, livestock farmers in the province administered over 1.03 million vaccine doses to 808,098 poultry birds.

In Cầu Kè District, a significant portion of the poultry population comprises free-range ducks, making up approximately 40% of the district's total poultry count of 1.1 million. The district has seen notable success in poultry disease prevention and control, particularly in flock management and avian influenza vaccination.

Despite the district's sizable poultry population, the primary focus of farming remains on large-scale production, with livestock farmers demonstrating a high level of awareness concerning disease prevention and control measures.

Hà Mỹ Xuyên, head of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Station of Cầu Kè, said that since the beginning of the dry season in 2024, the station has monitored poultry farming for restocking to promote and support poultry farmers in vaccine administration.

As a result, over 200,000 poultry birds have been vaccinated against avian influenza in the district, which led to the effective managing and monitoring of the disease without any outbreaks.

On average, Trà Vinh Province has around 6.7 million poultry birds raised by households annually.

Currently, there are three large-scale poultry farms with a total of 36,000 chickens as well as poultry farms of medium scale with a total of over 257,000 animals and small-scale livestock farming households.

This year, Trà Vinh Province aims to produce approximately 7.8 million poultry birds.
