Argentina resumes poultry exports

Argentina's state safety regulator Senasa said the country has resumed poultry shipments, weeks after announcing an export ban following the detection of bird flu in the local industry, WTVB reported.

Senasa said Uruguay approved new export certificates for Argentine poultry products, following a meeting with World Trade Organisation sanitary officials in Geneva.

Argentina halted exports in late February after the country reported its first case of bird flu in the poultry industry, in the southern Rio Negro province.

Senasa also said deals were agreed to resume shipments of fresh poultry meat from disease-free areas to Russia, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Japan, and some African countries.

The regulator said work is being done on sanitary negotiations to restore avian genetics exports to Mercosur countries and Mexico in accordance with international recommendations for the exchange of these goods.

According to Argentina's agriculture secretary data, the South American country exported 227,000 tonnes of edible poultry products last year.
