US, Canadian swine production systems had nearly 90 million hogs, pigs in December

 

 

 

In December 2025, there were 89.4 million hogs and pigs across US and Canadian swine production systems.

 

The six-month inventory was up 0.4% from December 2024, but down 0.029% from December 2023, according to data released by Statistics Canada and US Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

 

From that total, 7.1 million head were kept for breeding, down 1% from a year ago and 1% from two years prior. Meanwhile, market hog inventory, at 82.2 million head, was up 1% from December 2024 and 0.032% from 2023.

 

Semi-annual pig crop for the two countries came in at 85.1 million head, a 1% increase from 2024 and a 0.32% uptick from 2023. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 7.13 million head, down 0.07% from last year and 2% from 2023.

 

As for US swine production, on December 1, there were 75.5 million hogs and pigs. The Q4 2025 inventory was up slightly from last quarter and 1% from the year prior. From that total, 5.95 million head were kept for breeding, a marginal increase from last quarter, but down 1% from a year ago. Meanwhile, market hog inventory, at 69.6 million head, increased narrowly from September and just 1% from the December 2024 report.

 

Between September and November 2025, US pork producers weaned 35.0 million pigs, up slightly from 2024 and 1% from 2023. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 2.93 million head, up marginally from the year prior, but down 1% from 2023.

 

Canadian inventory of all hogs and pigs on January 1, 2026, was 13.9 million head, down 1% from January 2025 and January 2024. Kept for breeding came in at 1.22 million head, up slightly from last year but down 1% from 2024. Market hog inventory, at 12.7 million head, was down 1% from last year and 1% from 2024.

 

The semi-annual pig crop, at 15.2 million head, was up 3% from 2025, and only slightly up from 2024. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 1.24 million head, a 1% increase from last year, but a 1% reduction from 2024.

 

US inventory numbers were previously released on December 23. Canadian inventory numbers were released on February 27.
