Origin Agritech achieves 50% increase in corn yield through gene editing

Origin Agritech Ltd has announced the development of a high-yielding corn inbred line using precise gene editing techniques, resulting in a corn variety that surpasses traditional corn productivity by over 50%, International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications reported.

After conducting rigorous multilocational field trials spanning more than two years, Origin Agritech observed a remarkable yield increase of over 50% compared to the original corn line.

Dr Gengchen Han, chairman and CEO of Origin Agritech, said the substantial rise in yield potential presents a sustainable solution to address the escalating global demand for food.

Dr Han said that the company's gene-edited high-yield corn will play a pivotal role in advancing food security and sustainability on a global scale.

With plans to fully integrate this trait into its elite commercial corn line by the end of 2024, Origin Agritech aims to significantly enhance seed yield while simultaneously reducing the cost of hybrid seed production.
