Romania raises qualms on GM corn
Romania expressed apprehensions on GM corn cultivation for the first time on Thursday with environment minister Attila Korodi saying he will demand further study on MON 810 corn.
Korodi said he would require the Biological Security Commission to verify the impact the cultivation of MON 810 corn may have on the population's health and the environment.
Reports said that the minister intends to support a governmental order banning the GMOs.
Romania has allowed the cultivation of genetically modified soy for almost 10 years now, with experiments being conducted for modified plums and potatoes as well.
Although many companies lobbied in favor of GMOs, the EU decided that these crops are forbidden.
The only modified plant that is allowed to grow is corn.
