Thailand begins exporting eggs to Taiwan

Thailand has begun exporting eggs to Taiwan, after Taiwan announced it was diversifying its suppliers due to egg shortages and increased prices, Taiwan News reported.

Taiwan's Council of Agriculture (COA) said it will import 60 million eggs from Thailand, the US, Australia, Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Turkey, and Brazil in April and May.

Thailand had only previously sold eggs to Hong Kong and Singapore, but the country was optimistic that its track record of 15 years without bird flu would help it expand into new markets, such as Taiwan.

Thailand's Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives said 325,000 fresh hen eggs will be shipped to Taiwan by the end of March, with potentially 50 million more eggs to ship in 2023, valued at THB 230 million (~US$6.74 million; THB 10 = US$0.29). Thailand egg exports for 2022 were worth THB 1.23 billion (~US$35 million).

Taiwan's Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ) sent a delegation to Thailand earlier this month to discuss the project and negotiate fundamental guidelines and health certificate.
