Vietnam re- imposes import quotas on dairy products and corn

Vietnam would place import quotas again on raw cotton, milk materials and corn. These were initially announced to be quota free from April 1, but a prolonged drought has caused the reinstatements.

Vietnam is estimated to produce 110,000 tonnes of milk materials in 2005, up from 54,000 tonnes in 2000, meeting less than 15 percent of its dairy sector's demand. It has to import over 85 percent of the total volume of milk materials it needs for milk production.

The country now has around 965,000 hectares of corn, turning out over 3.4 million tonnes of corn each year.
