Poultry Association of Nigeria urges government to intervene in egg oversupply

The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has urged the Nigerian government to intervene in the current egg oversupply in the nation's poultry market, which has forced farmers to lower prices, Nairametrics reported.
Godwin Egbebe, national publicity secretary of PAN, said farmers are operating at a loss due to the oversupply of eggs.
He said major poultry farms have now lowered their prices and are suffering total losses as a result of the current egg glut.
A crate of eggs can now be purchased at large farm gates for as little as NGN 1,700 (~US$3.69; NGN 100 = US$0.22) or NGN 1,800 (~US$3.91), compared to NGN 2,000 (~US$4.34) or NGN 2,100 (~US$4.56) a few weeks ago.
Egbebe said farmers are producing more eggs on a daily basis, but there is a low demand because of the country's financial crisis. He called on the federal government to collect the current supply from farms and donate it as welfare.
