Ukraine grain production for 2007 forecast at 38 million tonnes

Ukraine's agriculture minister Yuri Melnyk said Wednesday that domestic grain production for 2007 is expected to rise to 38 million tonnes from 34.25 million tonnes harvested last year, due to good winter crop conditions and the high pace of this year's spring grain sowing.

Farms had already sown about 2.9 million hectares for the 2007 spring grains, Melnyk added.

Domestic sowed grain area is seen to rise by 6.4 percent on-year to 15 million hectares in 2007 from about 14.1 million hectares last year, said agriculture officials.
