Ukraine reports slow start to spring grain planting

Ukraine has begun spring planting in its southern regions, with 31,400 hectares planted to date, compared with 185,800 hectares on the same date last year, the agriculture ministry said Tuesday (Mar 28).

The planting has been delayed by cold weather.

Ukraine plans to plant early spring grains on 7.5 million hectares in 2006. Winter grains damaged by unusually cold weather in January-February will be replanted on 739,200 hectares, the ministry said.
