76,000 swine culled in Selangor, Malaysia due to ASF

A total of 76,000 swine infected with African swine fever (ASF) were culled in Kuala Langat and Sepang, Selangor, Malaysia, as part of a containment effort led by the Selangor Veterinary Services Department (DVS).

The disposal of the infected livestock was completed last week, ahead of the initial deadline of March 31, 2025.

Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Exco Datuk Izham Hashim stated that investigations were conducted across 115 swine farms in the two districts, including one illegal farm. Of these, 57 farms tested positive for ASF, while the remaining farms were found to be free of the virus.

In addition to the culling operation, authorities seized 68 swine and 9,405.7 kg of swine carcasses due to various violations, including the unauthorised movement of animals from farms. Seven investigation papers have been opened under Section 34 and Section 36 of the Animals Act 1953, and these cases will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor's office for further action.

Izham also announced that a policy paper on animal farm management has been prepared to prevent similar outbreaks in the future. The document is currently under review by the State Executive Council.
