Kuwait poultry and egg prices rising

Chicken prices in Kuwait have increased to KD 1 (~US$3.26) per kg, while the cost of one tray of eggs has jumped to KD 1.5 (~US$4.89) due to higher subsidised corn prices and the month of Ramadan, Arab News reported.

After the country's Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) reduced the subsidy for corn, the price of subsidised corn increased from KD 30 (~US$97.88) per tonne to KD 118 (~US$384.98). This has resulted in a 70% increase in the price of live chicken and eggs.

Tawfiq Al-Saleh, chairman of the board of directors of Al-Mubarakiya Poultry Company, said the price increase for poultry and eggs was also due to higher rent, wages, maintenance costs, and the materials required by chickens, such as soy, food concentrates, and medicines.

He urged PAAAFR and the Kuwait Flour Mills Company to reinstate corn subsidies so that the prices of live chicken and eggs could be reduced.

Seven poultry and egg production companies in Kuwait meet 60% of the market's demand for poultry and 120% of the market's demand for eggs.
