EW Nutrition launches Axxess XY xylanase at VICTAM in Bangkok, Thailand

EW Nutrition launched its newest product, Axxess XY — an intrinsically thermostable xylanase that breaks down both the soluble and insoluble fiber fraction from feed ingredients — during VICTAM 2024 which was held in Bangkok, Thailand, on March 12-14.

Axxess XY releases nutrients from cell wall fractions and improves the gut environment by mitigating viscosity, according to EW Nutrition. Feed producers can use it in various feed processing conditions while also achieving feed savings "with flexibility in feed formulations".

Jan Vanbrabant, chief executive officer of EW Nutrition, lauded Axxess XY as one of few of its kind developed for animal nutrition.

According to Dr. Andrew Sivaram, animal Nutritionist at Pahang Pharmacy, a distributor of EW Nutrition products in Malaysia, the company trial-tested Axxess XY in the feed formulations of poultry layer productions in the country, where corn and soybean meal are commonly used as feed ingredients.

As part of trial requirements, Pahang Pharmacy adhered to EW Nutrition's recommendation of reducing the metabolisable energy of the diet by 100 kilo calories per kilo and adding 100 grams of Axxess XY per tonne of feed. With this approach, cheaper by-products — like canola meal and wheat pollard — can be included in larger amounts in diets while also reducing crude palm oil by more than 10 kilos per tonne, Dr. Sivaram explained during EW Nutrition's presentation in VICTAM. Additionally, corn and soybean inclusions are also lowered.

Following the conclusion of the trials, none of Pahang Pharmacy's poultry layer customers reported any issues such as weakened performance, dropped weight, increased feed intake and affected feed quality.

"It seems all measured parameters are normal as before," Dr. Sivaram said. "What is important is that customers are able to enjoy feed cost savings after using Axxess XY." He further noted that Malaysian livestock producers can save about RM42 (US$8.86) per tonne of feed.

"We came up with the principle that our enzyme has to work," said Dr. Ajay Awati, global director of enzymes at EW Nutrition, during the Q&A session segment. "If we really want to give it true flexibility (for the nutritionist in feed formulation), we need to (create) something different which works equally well with soya diets or corn-soya diets."

"The successful launch of Axxess XY in VICTAM 2024 demonstrates our commitment to provide cutting-edge solutions to address the evolving needs of animal production and to contribute to the growth of the industry in the region," said Ramakanta Nayak, regional director for EW Nutrition South East Asia/Pacific.

"We are excited to have had such an amazing response to Axxess XY during and after our launch at VICTAM 2024," Dr. Awati said. "Axxess XY is the result of the EW Nutrition R&D team's hard work and dedication to pushing the boundaries of enzyme technology in animal nutrition."
